What is the function of a thermostat?
Thermostats help to maintain the engine coolant at the proper operating temperature. When the engine is cold, the thermostats prevent the flow of coolant to the radiator and direct the coolant back to the water pump. As the temperature of the coolant becomes warmer, the thermostats begin to open and permit some flow of coolant to the radiator.
Can the engine be operated without the thermostats?
Do not operate the engine without the water thermostats installed. Removing the thermostats opens the water pump bypass allowing most of the coolant to bypass the radiator, compounding any potential overheating.
