Charier is a family-owned business in the public works and civil engineering industry that established itself in 1897. The company has a successful business history and strong values. In 2022 and they recognized an opportunity to improve their safety culture in line with their purpose as a Mission Enterprise - a French legal framework in which businesses pursue a set social and environmental purpose with specific sustainability goals. They had a safety system in place, but they knew consistent application of the system didn’t always happen. They wanted ownership for safety to go beyond the safety department and involve all levels of the operations to build a resilient safety culture.
Results
The renewed focus on safety throughout the organization was a warm welcome, especially from employees. Even those who may have been hesitant at first are now volunteering to be on new teams and are seen as advocates onsite with their peers.
Employee-driven teams renewed safety processes like near miss reporting and safety meetings with a focus on clear expectations for every level of the organization to encourage engagement and ownership in the frontline, effective leading indicator measurements and positive recognition.
