From Buzzword to Breakthrough: The Evolution of Continuous Improvement in Safety Culture

Continuous improvement has become a buzzy term for many organizations, but how can you implement a continuous improvement initiative effectively?

OwnerShift, a program offered by Caterpillar Safety Services, teaches organizations how to implement and sustain continuous improvement that’s rooted in engaging employees from all levels of an organization in a data-driven approach. Outcomes include:

  • Increased feelings of ownership
  • Stronger accountability
  • Measurable improvement

What does the term "OwnerShift" mean?

“OwnerShift” refers to a process that transitions, or shifts, ownership of safety from the exclusive responsibility of the safety department to everyone in the organization. True safety ownership is achieved by engaging employees from all levels of the organization in a data-driven, continuous improvement process focused on positive, proactive accountability. Creating ownership of safety for every employee at all levels of your organization ensures everyone is accountable and empowered to create solutions and continuously improve.

Our customers have responded very positively to this concept as it connects the pains and challenges they’ve experienced to proven strategies for improvement. Traditional safety improvement methods relied on leadership and the safety department to make changes. OwnerShift “shifts” that responsibility to everyone in the organization, thus creating a stronger likelihood that changes will be implemented and sustained by those they affect.

What are some of the pains and challenges OwnerShift helps organizations address?

Some of the challenges we often see customers encountering include repeat incidents, lack of employee engagement, policies and procedures inconsistently applied, people not speaking up, communication gaps, lack of accountability, staffing challenges, underdeveloped leaders, and ineffective tools and processes.

What are the proven strategies that enable an organization to realize and sustain safety improvements?

resilient safety culture consists of four main components – systemmindsetleadership, and ownership. Understanding how your organization is performing in these four areas is the first step to improving culture and ultimately improving business results. That’s the first phase of the continuous improvement method we call OwnerShift:

  1. Assess the current state. Caterpillar Safety Services uses several assessment instruments to do this. They include a safety culture survey, a leadership performance assessment, a worksite assessment of systems and processes, and face-to-face interviews with employees at all levels. Once the current state data is collected and understood, leadership must:
  2. Build a strategy for improvement that relies on the data to identify key areas of need. The strategy will direct the organization to:
  3. Develop tactical gains using such tools as rapid improvement workshops and learning teams to improve safety systems. Leadership will also commission a cross-functional steering team to oversee the improvement activities and identify quick wins that can be implemented immediately. Once the tactical gains are planned, the steering team will:
  4. Implement the improvements and oversee all activities from piloting to full implementation.
  5. To sustain progress, the steering team will evaluate the improvements and integrate them into organizational systems. The sustain phase also includes strategic checkpoints with top leadership to evaluate progress, continuous development of the steering team members and leaders, and a benchmark survey about 12-14 months after implementation to measure cultural improvement.
