Grid codes are important because they establish technical and operational standards for power generating assets that connect to an electricity grid.
What is a grid code?
A grid code is a set of requirements for power generating units and facilities defined by the Transmission System Operator (TSO) or Distribution System Operator (DSO) responsible for maintaining the reliable and secure operation of the electricity grid.
Grid codes must be fulfilled for power generating assets to gain permission for connecting to the electricity grid.
Why do grid codes matter?
Grid codes have been developed to regulate the capabilities, operation, performance and compliance of power generating units connecting to the grid.
They confirm the reliability of these assets to automatically respond to stabilize the grid during voltage and frequency changes while remaining connected to the grid to provide support when faults occur.
Grid code compliance is a basic requirement for any power generating unit or facility to connect to the grid for continuous operation.
How does offering equipment compliant with grid codes benefit customers?
When customers buy grid code compliant and certified equipment, they can be more confident that their grid connection will be approved by the TSO or DSO. This means they won't have to deal with long delays for clarifications and, where possible, avoid costly site compliance testing.
