So we’re increasing our investment in high-efficiency energy conversion and electrification, expanding the use of alternative fuels, maximizing the efficiency of power systems, and looking for new ways to help you do more with less.

We’re proud to say that we have the industry’s broadest line of machines that meet this requirement to reduce NOx and Particulate Matter and leading to cleaner air. By planning ahead, we were able to minimize design changes and maintain the reliability and performance our customers demand from their products. Every Tier 4 / Stage V engine is equipped with a combination of proven electronic, fuel, air and aftertreatment components, based on engine size, application and the geographic location in which it will work.
Tier 4 engines have delivered over 150,000 hours of successful operation on Cat Large Mining Trucks. The modular aftertreatment system has proven its ability to deliver with no impact on machine performance. The modular aftertreatment system reduces overall fluid and fuel consumption. Lower fuel burn results in longer engine life and lower repair costs.
We offer Stage V engine emission packages for several of our underground hard rock loading and hauling machines, including the R1700 and R2900 load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, and AD45 and AD63 trucks. In the case of the AD45, its EU Stage V solution is available as a retrofit kit for older AD45B models. Additionally, we offer another diesel particulate matter reduction solution called the Wall Flow Filter, which is available as a retrofit kit.
Hybrid machines are able to use different types of fuels or power sources such as biofuels and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which can deliver the same performance as diesel while reducing fuel burn and associated emissions.
Biodiesels are derived from plant-based or animal fat that is modified for use as a partial diesel fuel replacement. It can be used in any unmodified diesel engine but must still comply with fuel oil standards to ensure reliable and emissions compliant engine performance.
Our Diesel Gas Blending conversion kits for mining trucks are a dual-fuel technology that allows you to substitute from diesel to cleaner-burning LNG, which can be sourced locally and is produced more naturally than diesel. Not only has LNG has been proven to reduce emissions by up to 30%, it also costs about 30% less than diesel with zero impact on performance.
DGB solutions are available today for Cat 785C and 793D Large Mining Trucks, with additional models under consideration. Biofuels solutions are currently in development.
Reducing waste is another way we support sustainability initiatives. In addition to taking steps to reduce waste in our own facilities, we reduce waste by rebuilding and reusing machines and components and providing retrofit solutions that provide enhancements and improvements to keep older machines in production longer. In the process, we’re conserving energy, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing the need for raw materials.
We’ve also increased maintenance intervals and extended the life of consumables to decrease the amount of waste contributed to the environment. These changes may seem small but can have a big impact on the environment. For example, we’ve extended the recommended oil and filter change intervals for a variety of key hydraulic and powertrain oil circuits in our Cat 797 trucks. Over the life of one 797, we’ve eliminated the need for 125,000 liters of hydraulic oil — enough to fill a 20-by-40-foot swimming pool – and saved about 750 hydraulic filters and breathers.
Together with our dealers, we provide rebuild and remanufacturing services that increase the lifespan of equipment, reusing instead of discarding components, reducing waste and keeping nonrenewable resources in circulation for multiple lifetimes. Equipment owners can choose to have their own components rebuilt or purchase remanufactured parts and components. When a machine has reached the end of its first life, the entire machine can be rebuilt to like-new specifications.
Technology and autonomy offerings deliver significant benefits across the board, from boosting safety and productivity to more consistent and efficient operations. The result is also a decrease in fuel burn. Autonomous operations enable higher machine utilization, for reductions in idle time and less wasted fuel. Fleet management systems dispatch algorithms that result in less idle time and reduced bunching at the loading site for a decrease in emissions and a reduction in greenhouse gases per ton.
The Cat Microgrid system, which contains both photovoltaic solar modules and energy storage, provides increased energy efficiency with no reliance on the grid and efficient power that can be produced where and when it's needed without transmission lines and transformer losses. Microgrid infrastructure projects reduce overall emissions through microgrid controls of solar and storage devices.
