In the heart of Aspen, Colorado, Stutsman Gerbaz Earthmoving has been a cornerstone of the community for over six decades. Founded in 1960 by brothers-in-law Dick Stutsman and Jerry Gerbaz, the company has grown into Aspen’s largest excavation business, seamlessly blending tradition with cutting-edge techniques and technology.
Now under the leadership of third-generation owner Shay Stutsman, the company continues to uphold its founders’ commitment to excellence. Shay’s passion for earthmoving was evident from a young age. “Shay has been in love with Cat® equipment and excavating since the day he could walk,” says his father, Dave Stutsman. “We had to drag him out of the machines.”
This deep-rooted enthusiasm has fostered a company culture that values both heritage and innovation. Stutsman Gerbaz maintains a fleet comprised of approximately 95% Cat equipment, which attests to their trust in the brand’s reliability and performance.
Beyond utilizing modern machinery, the company also honors its history through restoration projects. Shay embarked on a global search to find and restore a 1949 Caterpillar D4, a project that reflects his dedication to the brand and his family’s legacy. “People get moments when they realize all the hard work has been for something. Seeing this restoration completed is one of those moments for me,” Shay reflects.
The company’s commitment to family extends beyond blood relations. Generations of employees have become integral parts of the Stutsman Gerbaz family. “We are a very close-knit group, and it’s wonderful to have that connection,” says Lisa Stutsman Thorpe, the company’s vice president. This familial atmosphere has fostered loyalty and dedication among the team and strengthened their roots in the community.
Stutsman Gerbaz remains devoted to embracing new technologies and methodologies to tackle complex projects as they look to the future. Their partnership with Cat and other industry leaders ensures they stay at the forefront of the excavation industry. As Shay says: “At the end of the day, you’re only as good as your last project.”
