How-to Guide: Cat® 950 Wheel Loader Starter Replacement

This guide shows how to do a wheel loader starter replacement yourself, specifically on a Cat® 950.

To replace the starter on a Cat 950 Wheel Loader, you’ll need:
Part No. 6V-9099: 19.0 mm wrench
Part No. 6V-9098: 18.0 mm wrench
Refer to Special Publication NENG2500, Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog, for tools and supplies.
Remove the Old Starter
Turn off the battery disconnect.
Move the steering frame lock in position to the front frame and install the locking pin.
Remove the side panel and open the engine hood.
Make sure all parts have cooled down.
Remove the nut and disconnect the harness assembly from the electric starting motor.
Take a picture of how the wires are connected or follow the diagrams in your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM).
Remove the starter. Check your machine series and the Cat Service Manual to verify if a lifting device is recommended when lifting the starter motor up and out of the chassis. The starter motor weighs approximately 55 lb. (25 kg).
Remove the remaining three bolts from the starter housing.
Install the New Starter
Put the replacement starter into place.
Secure it to the machine by attaching the three bolts.
Reconnect the electrical wires. Follow torque specifications for the fasteners on the wiring harnesses.
Secure the electrical harness with a nut.
Reinstall the side panel and close the engine hood.
