How to Replace a Cat® Compact Track Loader Alternator

Estimated read time: 2 minutes

Replacing the alternator on your compact track loader doesn’t have to mean hiring a field service technician. You may be able to do it yourself by using this Cat® Self-Service Options (SSO) guide.

This video shows how to replace the alternator on a Cat® 259D3 Compact Track Loader. The procedure should be similar on your model of compact track loader. Just reference your SSO instructions for specifics.

Depending on the condition of your machine you may need more than just the new alternator. Assess what needs to be replaced, and then find what you need for your specific compact track loader at Parts.Cat.com.

A mechanic’s standard tools should be sufficient to complete the work. Now, before you begin:

  1. Make sure you're ready for the steps ahead.
  2. Pause the video when needed.
  3. Be safe!

Remove the Old Alternator

  • Open the rear panel and use the pin to lock the door in place.

  • Disconnect the battery by turning the battery connect switch to the off position.

  • Remove the cover plate and disconnect the harness assemblies from the alternator.

  • Use a wrench to lock the back nut while loosening the bolt.

  • Carefully lower the alternator out of position so you can access the wire assembly in the back. Once the wires are disconnected, remove the old alternator.

Install the New Alternator

  • Position the new alternator so you can reconnect the wires in the back and tighten the bolts securely.

  • Once those are tightened, reinstall the covers.

  • Place the alternator into position and replace the mounting bolts.

  • Reinstall the belt. You may need a lever to help guide it into place. Check the belt tension and then tighten all bolts to the correct torque specification.

  • Reinstall the rear panel.

  • Turn the battery connect switch back to the on position and remove the door lock pin.

That's it! Your Cat 259D3 Compact Track Loader is ready to get back to work.
