Popular mini excavator attachments include buckets, thumbs, augers, hydraulic hammers, grapples, compactors and cold planers. With the right attachment, one machine can help customers dig, lift, break, grade and handle cleanup work more efficiently.

Mini excavators can be paired with augers, grapples, hydraulic hammers, mulchers, cold planers, compactors, tiltrotators and a wide range of buckets. Choosing the right attachment helps customers get more value from their machine and take on more jobs with confidence.

The excavator arm includes the boom and stick, which work together to position the bucket or attachment.  The raises and lowers from the machine, while the stick extends the reach needed to dig, place, lift or finish the task at hand.

Common excavator bucket options include digging buckets, ditch-cleaning buckets, grading buckets, and heavy duty buckets. Each bucket is designed to help customers match the tool to the job, whether they are digging in different ground conditions, shaping a finished grade, cleaning ditches or moving material.

MHE Application-Based Attachment FAQs

Buckets are the primary attachment for digging applications. Caterpillar offers a wide range of buckets, each optimized for specific digging and site preparation tasks. Digging buckets are designed for soft to moderate ground while heavy duty buckets offer maximum performance and value over a broad range of applications.  

The best attachment depends on the material, working conditions and jobsite application. For trenching, digging buckets and heavy duty buckets are the preferred attachment, while a vibratory plate compactor is desired to compact soil and finish surfaces after excavation. Hydraulic hammers are commonly used in demolition to break concrete, asphalt and rock. Grapples are helpful in moving debris and jobsite cleanup. 

For landscaping, popular mini excavator attachments include augers for drilling holes for posts, trees and fencing applications, digging buckets, ditch cleaning buckets, grading buckets all help with excavation, drainage work, grading and site preparation, flail mowers support vegetation management and tiltrotators improve attachment positioning and precision for grading and shaping work.

Land clearing work often requires attachments that can remove vegetation, manage debris and improve jobsite cleanup.  Mulchers cut and process small trees and dense vegetation.  Grapples support material handling by moving brush, roots and debris.  Buckets collect and load cleared material.
